"The Dancer," his body curved, is avoiding both the new shell being passed up and recoil of the gun. The loading is teamwork, requiring a rapid and steady stream of shells passed up from the underground magazine (see top of picture), precise action in setting the fuses and loading the gun, and complete cooperation with other members of the crew, who may be turning the gun around to follow the target or changing the elevation even as the loader is working.
