Animation of a dendritic cell, part of the immune system. Dendritic cells ingest and process foreign material, such as bacteria and viruses, producing segments of foreign protein. The dendritic cell presents these proteins on its surface, attached to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins. These complexes activate T-cells in the immune system, enabling an immune response to the foreign material.
