The ancient world's most complex mechanism. An ancient legend tells us that the Yellow Emperor, while at war in about 2600 BCE, lost his way when his enemy caused a dense fog to descend on his troops. The chariot pre-dated the magnetic compass and used cogs and gears to maintain a constant orientation.
