Allied Infantrymen Advance Under Fire In ItalyCrouched low in the face enemy fire, Allied infantrymen cross a blasted railway bridge over the Volturno River to drive the Germans form the strategic town of Cancello, Italy. The German fought desperately in a futile effort to retain their grip on Cancello, which is situated on the north bank of the Volturno along the most difficult part of the river to cross. After infantrymen drove out the Germans, Allied engineers spanned the river with pontoon bridges over which armored equipment moved in pursuit of the enemy. January 03, 1943.
