Date: 1596-1669.The high finish of this drawing, as well as the two annotations beginning "Incidat ...," in the hand of an ecclesiastical censor, indicate that it was intended by Pietro da Cortona for his engraver - and indeed the design was reproduced in the same dimensions but in reverse by the Dutch engraver Theodor Matham (1589-1676), a contemporary of the artist who was in Rome in the mid- I630s, a date that accords well with the style of Cortona's drawing. Unfortunately, the engraving does not bear a dedicatory annotation that might help us in the interpretation of the allegorical message of the subject.
