On 20 July 1944, Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg left a briefcase packed with explosives in the briefing room of the 'Wof's Lair', Hitler's headquarters in East Prussia. The bomb exploded but Hitler escaped with only minor injuries. Stauffenberg and other officers implicated in the July Plot were arrested, tried and executed. Hitler is pictured flanked by Field Marshal Keitel, Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering and Martin Bormann. The photographer is unknown.
