According to Chinese mythology, the Sun, the Monkey god, sat on a cloud above a city outside of which were thousands of priests and carts laden with bricks and building materials (pictured here). The Sun took the form of a Daoist priest and asked about the people and city. The city was 'Slow-Carts Country.' The people were Buddhist priests. In times past, the king had ordered the Buddhist priests to pray for rain. They did but no rain came. When the Daoist priests prayed, it poured, so the Buddhist priests were made slaves. This illustration dates to around 1922.
