The Order of Our Lady of Sorrows was founded in 1230 by Pierre Nolasque, governor of Aragon, and Raymond de Pegnafort, Canon of Barcelona, to free Christians languishing in servitude to the Moors. Nolasque was the first grand master, and the vows included allowing "themselves to be taken hostage by the Moors" to liberate Christians. Under Nolasque, the knights freed thousands of Christians, but later became a purely religious order.. The Order of the Glorious Virgin Mary was founded in 1233 by Bartholome, Bishop of Vicence, but was not approved by the Pope until 1268. They vowed to put down troublemakers with their swords, but were forbidden to wear golden spurs. They were known as "les freres joyeux" (happy brothers)..
