A lone Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) in the Coso Mountains. The largest of the yuccas, characteristic of the Mojave Desert, symbolic for the area. Mormon pioneers named the species Joshua, seeing in its uplifted branches the image of a person in prayer, gesturing wildly, pointing the way to a Biblical Promised Land.
