A Joshua tree silhouetted by the setting sun in California's Mojave Desert. The largest of the yuccas, Yucca brevifolia, it is characteristic of the Mojave Desert, and symbolic for the area. Mormon pioneers named the species Joshua, seeing in its uplifted branches the image of a person in prayer, gesturing wildly, pointing the way to a Biblical Promised Land.
