Russia; St Petersburg; Mariinsky Theatre. Named after Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Tsar Alexander II, the Mariinsky Theatre, or Kirov Theatre as it was known in Soviet times, was designed by Rianldi and opened in 1783. Today both its ballet and opera companies are known throughout the world.
