Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus. Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE). This strain of enterococcus bacteria is resistant to the antibiotic vancomycin, known as Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci. Illness due to VRE infections in healthy people is rare. Common infections caused by enterococci are urinary tract inections and wound infections.
