This unusual Laysan albatross chick is leucistic, a condition in which the animal has reduced skin pigmentation. It is different from albinism, which affects melanin production, which would also affect the pigmentation of the eyes. Here, we see the chick´s eyes are unaffected. Though leucistic chicks are known to fledge, none are known to survive into adulthood in the wild due to being easier to spot by predators and to sun sensitivity.
