Regarded as one of the greatest combat leaders in Marine Corps history, in 1945 he led his Combat Team 28 to the top of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, an event made famous by Joe Rosenthal's iconic image of the flag being raised by five Marines and a Navy medic.
