The Times Square Alliance has planned activities and supplied beach chairs for sitting and relaxing. A similar program is also in effect in Herald Square where Broadway also intersects major streets. Bicycles and pedestrians take to the streets on Saturday, August 16, 2008 for the second weekend of the New York Summer Streets event. 6.9 miles of Manhattan streets were cleared of traffic from 7 A.M. to 1 P.M., stretching from the Brooklyn Bridge to East 72nd street. Thousands of people came out to walk, bike and involve themselves in the activities that were set up at the three rest stops along the way. The event will be repeated for the next two Saturdays. The parade is patterned after a similar parade that takes place in Paris and allows vegetarians to espouse their meatless lifestyle.
