The Nativists, wearing tall beaver hats, fought the Pennsylvania State Militia in Philadelphia. Fighting killed 24 and burned down two Catholic churches. Tensions built up in 1844 when the Roman Catholic bishop persuaded school officials to use both the King James and Latin Vulgate bibles.
