CURIETHERAPY. CURIETHERAPY Photo essay from hospital. Brachytherapy at the Hôpital Saint Louis in Paris. Brachytherapy is one type of treatment for breast cancer. It uses radioactive iridium wires placed directly in the tumor or in the area from which the tumor was removed. This technique can also be used to deliver an additional dose to the scar, an area which is susceptible to relapse. All the catheters have been inserted, and stops are positioned to keep the catheters in place.

Drums of waste from the cleanup of the Goiania accident, which took place in late 1987. 249 people were exposed during the accident, which occurred when a junk yard dealer in the city of Goiania broke open an abandoned radiation therapy machine and removed a small highly radioactive cake of cesium chloride. Attracted to the bright blue color of the substance, children touched it, rubbed it on their bodies and in one case, ingested it. Several blocks of the city had to be razed due to contaminati
