The recently opened park, formerly a parking lot, features grassy areas and a waterfall and canal hearkening back to the colonial period when Canal Street really was a canal, albeit a fetid one. The water feature was designed by artist Elyn Zimmerman and named Canal Waterworks. The park is located at the intersection of Canal, Varick and Laight streets, hence it's name. ( Richard B. Levine)
