Statue of Roger Conant, founder of Salem, Massachusetts. Salem is the site of the Salem witch trials, a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. Nineteen women were hanged, and one pressed to death, after being found guilty of witchcraft by the Court of Oyer and Terminer.
